How to Measure a Horse to Fit a Horse blanket

Knowing the size of blanket needed to fit your horse is important for the safety and comfort of your horse. It’s important to note that horse blanket fit and sizing is not the same between all manufacturers. Methods to measure a horse for a horse blanket very from manufacture to manufacturer. The best tool to use is a soft measuring tape. Below is how to measure a horse for a horse blanket from the following horse blanket manufacturers:


For blankets made by WeatherBeeta, determine the body length by measuring the centre of the chest to the end of the rump.

To determine the back seam length, measure from the wither to the top of the tail for the back seam.


For Weatherbeeta exercise sheets measure the back length.

For blankets made by Bucas, measure from (A) the centre point of the chest, over the high point of the shoulder, and then to (B) the rear of the hind leg.

If your horse measures in between these sizes it is suggested to get the smaller size, as the larger size might move around more or end up pulling the blanket backwards.

For horse blankets made by Horseware Ireland, use a soft measuring tape, measure from (A) at the center point of the chest, across the point of the shoulder and to the point (B) at the center of the tail. When you have the measurement, subtract 10cm (4inches).

Note: Every horse is different and there are many different styles of blankets to suit all shapes and sizes. Shedrow:

For Shedrow horse blankets, measure from the centre of the chest, around the body to the centre of the tail.

Your total length in inches will indicate your horses blanket size. If your horse is in between blanket sizes, round up to the next available size.

Note: this is a guideline and blanket styles will fit depending on your horses body type.


For Tough-1 blankets, measure the centre of chest to centre of tail.

If your horse is in between sizes round to the closest size.
